Don't forget to stretch!

Alright, my fitness friends! This is the first official real post (that last one was just a test). To start off, I'm going to tell you some great stretches that should be done after a warm up routine (try 10 minutes of cardio). I know many of you are probably rolling yours eyes and saying "well...this isn't the work out routine I was hoping for", and you're right...it's not. However, it's possibly just the most important part of any workout. If you don't stretch, you could run into some serious injuries that will take a lot longer to heal than our 15 minute "boring" stretches. So, take the extra time and do your body a favor by stretching! :).

Ok, first things first, always remember to breathe! Throughout all of these stretches, remember to take deep breaths. With each deep breath exhale, you may be able to deepen your stretch with more ease.

Stretch #1: Sit down on a mat with your legs straight out in front of you. Inhale deeply while raising your arms, and exhale while bringing your hands as close to your feet as possible. With each deep breath, exhale and try to further your stretch a little bit. DON'T EVER STRETCH TO THE POINT WHERE YOU'RE IN PAIN; you could seriously damage your muscles/tendons. Remember, we're doing these stretches to prevent injuries, not cause them! Hold this stretch for 15 seconds.

Stretch #2: Your arms are important to stretch as well. Try watching this youtube video for some great tips!. I've found that if I do a thorough arm stretch, then my arms aren't nearly as sore after a workout! It's like magic :).

Stretch #3: If you're a runner like me, your calfs are going to be killing you. A really simple stretch that is basically my "go-to" is just standing a foot away from a wall and putting your foot on it and leaning forward like this . It's amazing how great this stretch really feels, and it helps a ton!

Now, I know stretching is boring and seems like it takes forever. But I promise you, if you just take 15 minutes to stretch out, you'll be in less pain the next days! All of these can be done right in your dorm room, and they don't even take up that much space! So try these basic stretches out, and feel free to comment how you liked them, or what didn't work for you. Remember to stay fit, stay healthy and stay active! :)
